How it works

Teacher and students have real-world lessons to choose from. Lessons inspire critical thinking

Let’s say you’re an 8th grade math teacher and you log onto the Arts Connect library. You will go to the 8th grade Math Curriculum section and, for example, you might find a program on the Creation of Michael Jordan Sneakers. It would consist of 5- 10 short videos, hosted by Michael Jordan. The videos describe how the sneakers are created and might include elements such as vision, design, use of materials, costing, production, and the marketing campaign. The math teacher might want to focus on the algebra of a costing model or the geometry associated with creation and production of the sneaker.

Sample One Week 8th Grade Math Class

Preparation

Teacher downloads Michael Jordan class materials for the week.

Day One

Opening video for day one: Michael Jordan talking about creating his sneaker. Today’s exercise: creating the sneaker sole – how he designed it and why. Using Jordan’s size 16 sneaker for comparison, each student now needs to measure his or her shoe size and width as the first step in the geometry problem of creating sneakers of their own.

Day Two

Opening video for day two:  Michael Jordan discussing the height/width of his sneakers. Today’s exercise: creating sneaker height/width based on student’s shoe size.

Day Three

Opening video for day three: Michael Jordan discussing the logo for his sneakers. Today’s exercise: creating the sneaker logo; size, dimensions, placement.

Day Four

Opening video for day four: Michael Jordan discussing the laces for his sneakers. Today’s exercise: creating the sneaker laces; length, width, color, material.

Day Five: Makerspace (STEM/STEAM) Hands-on Exercises

Opening video: Michael Jordan talking to the students about the colors and styling of his sneaker. Today’s exercise: hands-on custom sneaker design and creation using online tools and art materials.
