There is a famous quote that goes something like this: “A moment lasts all of a second, but a memory lives on forever.”
Though the sentiment is altogether poignant and inspirational, it also touches upon the notion of memory and value we place on our own lives—and our past—every day. For the artist and the everyman, this loss of past and the rich contextual experiences that make up our lives and our art can also mean a living death sentence; one that robs a person’s life out from under them.

Following an artists’ reception on April 20th and a weeklong preview display at Robertson Boulevard’s Farmani Gallery, the Focus on AIDS Foundation held its 12th Annual Benefit Auction on April 27th. The night was a resounding success, as proceeds from the evening put the foundation over the $3,000,000 mark in funds raised over its 20 years in existence.

Who would have imagined that the delectable art of pairing fine wines and five-star cuisine would, eighteen years later, bring over fourteen million dollars to a worthy cause and increase the lifespan of those diagnosed with a terminal disease?
It’s a wonder any one would ever say that one man or woman couldn’t make a difference.
“This was an opportunity to see the fruits of our labor and the chance to really make a difference,” Barbara Balik, Director of Special Giving at Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, explains. She’s referring to one of the most prestigious events for chefs and winemakers in the country, “A Culinary Evening with the California Winemasters”.
