Paul Mathieu

A multi-talented artist and designer, Paul Mathieu has studios around the world: New York, Provence, Rajasthan and Venice. Mathieu entered the world of furniture design in 1991 thanks to Andrée Putman, an early devotee of Mathieu’s work. The design maven asked him to imagine a furniture collection for Ecart International, her celebrated Paris loft showroom. The pieces from this debut remain available today through Ralph Pucci galleries.
Later, in 2003, Mathieu was commissioned by a 13th-century church in Aix-en-Provence to create new liturgical furniture. There, he broke with tradition by installing furniture in a historic context.
Shortly thereafter, he created two new collections, Aria and Madeleine. The first one, a bronze furniture and lighting collection, is produced at a time-honored French foundry. Every piece in the line has been hand-cast and individually finished using traditional craftsmanship. The second, Madeleine, features hand-blown Venetian glass.
Nowadays, Mathieu is highly regarded for his ability to fashion interior spaces that reflect their occupants’ tastes and sensibilities. Elaborate and sensual, Mathieu’s interiors exude a true elegance, and his designs marry handcrafted techniques with modern style.
