Now firmly established in Miami’s trendy Wynwood district, PULSE is designed, according to Allen, to “meet the needs of collectors interested in the border between established and emerging art.” The show has already created a stir, with nearly 18,000 people attending last year. In 2005, Allen launched PULSE New York in the West Village.

Allen’s background was well-suited to discern quality established and emerging art and attract top-echelon galleries. Raised in New York, Allen worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Christie’s, and had her own consulting business before launching PULSE. With her background in the traditional and an eye for emerging art and what sells, her show has attracted plum international and national galleries.

Highly discriminating, PULSE selects only 25% of the galleries that apply. Nevertheless, the fair’s “pulse” is global. The fair showcases contemporary video, photography, painting, performance art and installations from Mexico, Brazil, India, England, Italy and Switzerland.

Some hot artists of interest at PULSE this year include Ori Gorsht (Israel), Jordi Bernado (Spain), Massimo Vitali (Italy), Asgar Gabriel (Germany) and Andy Goldsworthy (England). Art stars aside, collectors who come indicate a strong interest in installations and videos.

Clearly, Allen has her finger on the pulse of art taste and trend. While a very young show, many exhibitors have attracted the attention of major museum collections.
